Department Introduction

Our school is situated within the picturesque Yangmingshan National Park, surrounded by stunning scenery of mountains and water. From the department building, one can enjoy distant views of Guanyin Mountain, the Taiwan Strait, Taipei City, and the vast fields along the Tamsui River. The school's architecture exudes a sense of ancient charm, with diverse and elegant pavilions, complemented by beautiful gardens. This exquisite natural environment provides the ideal setting for fostering open-mindedness and engaging in the study of music.

Our department was established as the day division of the "Chinese Culture College" in 1963, under the planning of the founding director, Shen Xueyong. It was the first private music department in Taiwan.

In 1980, it was upgraded and restructured as "Chinese Culture University."

In 1992, the department was divided into the Western Music Division and the Chinese Music Division.

In 2009, the department merged again, and the Master's program in Music was divided into the Western Music group and the Chinese Music group.

In 2015, the National Music Department was integrated into the department, and the Master's program in Music canceled the Chinese Music group. The department was then named the Department of Music, including the Master's program.

Throughout its history, the department has been under the careful planning of directors such as Zhang Dasheng, Wu Jizha, Tang Zhen, Ma Xiaojun, Chen Lin, Deng Changguo, Zhang Hao, Peng Shengjin, Chen Langgu, Feng Xuan, and the current director Lu Wen-ci. Over the past 50 years, it has nurtured numerous musicians who excel in performance, composition, broadcasting, and conducting, as well as successful music entrepreneurs.

The most prominent feature of our department is the irreplaceable "natural scenery." While the teaching equipment is technologically advanced, academically, we adhere to the fundamental belief that "there are no shortcuts to achieving mastery in performance; the pursuit of artistic truth, goodness, and beauty should never cease." We cultivate students in a liberal academic atmosphere, encourage various academic interactions, and promote professional performances to enhance their performance skills. We actively encourage students to pursue minor or double degrees to broaden their career prospects and open up wider paths for their future.

Simultaneously, we actively invite foreign experts to give lectures, hold academic seminars, and offer courses that combine the study of classical and innovative music to meet the demands of the era. We encourage students to study abroad for a year at sister schools, allowing them to earn credits and broaden their international perspectives, moving towards international exchanges. In recent years, due to the rapid changes in the social environment, we actively plan courses that integrate with industry and invite industry professionals to teach. We promote international performances and exchange programs to expand students' global outlook. We are also actively developing an action-learning environment with no spatial limitations, aiming to achieve the goal of producing practical music talents who can seamlessly integrate learning and application.
